Programme Objectives

The Doctorate degree in Business Administration (DBA) is designed for people who have achieved, or expect to achieve, senior organisational positions and who wish to develop their analytical and research skills and knowledge. It is a professional doctorate degree, equivalent to a PhD but with a strong focus on applied research. Learn how to enhance professional practice by applying and developing theoretical frameworks and perspectives.

Develop the students’ proficiency in research, methodological and analytical skills.
Promote critical thinking and the ability to deal with complex, interdisciplinary facets of organisations.
Foster professional development skills.
Provide the highest level of management education.
In addition, the DBA students will be imparted knowledge to enhance their managerial practice and/or organisation.

Methods of Assessment

As with all doctoral degree programmes, the key assessment output is a thesis, and the two taught modules are focused on providing the students with the opportunity to explore their chosen specialised area of research and preparing them to complete the thesis. There is therefore relatively limited variation in assessment methods – all modules are largely assessed by classic ‘academic writing exercises’, such as research projects and a pilot study report. Oral presentations are included as a formative assessment method, and aim to support students in developing their ability to articulate and defend their research at viva voce.

Applicants should have a Master's Degree in a subject related to business and/or management (for example MBA), together with a minimum of three years of managerial experience.
Applicants will also be asked to send a short research proposal.
All applicants will be interviewed and must show that they have undertaken recent and relevant study or practice in the field of business and/or management

Applicants must possess one of the following:

IELTS 6.5 (with no elements lower than 5.5)

Application Procedure

International student is required to apply for a student pass if he/she wishes to study full-time in Singapore.

Applicant is required to submit the following documents to MDIS:

Copy of applicant's Certified / Notarised copy of Education Results/Certificates and Transcripts ( with detailed results)
Copy of the student pass (For applicants transferred from other schools in Singapore) or Notification for Cancellation of Student Pass, Visit pass and Embarkation Form.
Must show proof of English Medium Study / First Placement Test Attempted / IELTS / TOEFL

MDIS permits students to pay their course fee in instalments. An administrative charge of S$107.00 (inclusive of GST) will be levied on each late instalment payment of the course fee. Fees are payable upon confirmation and acceptance of the place in the programme before the programme commencement. You may pay your fee by cash, NETS, VISA, MasterCard, AMEX or by cheque or through our financial assistance scheme.If payment is by cheque, please indicate the details of the programme applied for on the back of the cheque, stating clearly you personal particulars and company name. Unless otherwise stated, all fees are inclusive of GST. Please note that under the Private Education Act, all students will enter into a Fee Protection Scheme contract with MDIS.

What is a DBA?

The Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) is developed and designed for ambitious professionals seeking skills applicable in senior management positions. Students will learn strategies to enhance their organisation by applying and developing theoretical frameworks.

What is the difference between a DBA and a PhD?

DBA focuses on acquiring specialised knowledge for professional career development in the business world. The programme is more hands-on and grounded in the day-to-day operations of running a business. Of course, if you would like to move to academia at any stage, you will be welcome to do so. The quality standards of both are pegged at the same level.

Is the DBA programme flexible?

We currently offer our DBA as a 36-month long part-time programme to cater to working individuals intending to balance their personal and professional commitments.

How does the dual supervisor-system work?

You will be assigned a Director of Studies from Teesside University, UK, once you begin working on your dissertation. Simultaneously, you will also be allotted a local Supervisor from Singapore. They will both bring their knowledge and expertise to guide you in the regular joint meetings that you will have.
